The Torah was given some 3300 years ago to the Nation of Israel at Mount Sinai in the presence of millions of witnesses and called the Five Books of Moshe Rabeynu – Moses, highlighted by the Ten Commandments.

At the time of the giving and receiving of the Torah, all the Jewish souls who were to live on Earth since then, until the time of redemption by the messiah, were present to witness the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

The Five Books of Moshe - Moses contain four levels of depth and understanding. The Five Books, themselves, are the first level and called in Hebrew  ”Pshat" - Simplicity, which suggests that the stories in the Torah are the clothing covering a much deeper meaning. In effect, the Torah, itself, is hiding in stories and events.  But, make no mistake - it is not the Torah itself.

Further, the Torah is a coded message – a cosmic code and the “blueprint” for creation. The remaining levels are called, in Hebrew, ”Remez” - Hint, "Darush" - Interpretation, and the hidden level, referred to as “Sod” - Secret or Concealment. These three levels are the key to the code - the “Code Opener” - and without these, the Torah cannot be understood correctly.

These Talmudic Studies, i.e. the “Mishna” and the “Gemara”, as well as various commentaries on the Torah and the many “Halachot” (Torah Laws), all multiplied by endless sub-levels, are aspects of the “Code Opener”. The fourth and deepest of them all is the hidden level, the “Kabbalah” level of the Torah, which reveals the deeper meaning and most holy of secrets - the soul of the Torah.

The hidden part of Torah was revealed to the world for the first time by the “Tana Kadosh” – Holy Sage, Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai, who received permission from the Heavens to reveal the Torah secrets by way of writing the holy book, the “Zohar”, which is known to be the foundation and the “Kabbalah Bible” to all Kabbalah teaching since then.

Until recently, Kabbalah was taught only to a few worthy Torah scholars. This part, regarded as the “Soul of the Torah”, Mysticism, has been a part of Judaism since before the time of the receiving of the Torah.

The Torah contains many stories of mystical experiences throughout its twenty-four books. These include the endless upper spiritual worlds above ours, the appearance of angels to different prophets and non-prophets, the reincarnation and the journey of the soul to this world from upper worlds to be clothed in a corporeal body for the purpose of its correction, and the realm of reward and punishment in the upper world of souls, Heaven and Hell – reward and punishment.

The Kabbalah provides answers to many questions, such as:  For what reason did the creator create the world? Why are we here? If we came here to live, then why are we dying? And, if we came here to die, why are we living?  What happens to the soul after death?  And many more such questions.

  Rabbi
Shimon Bar-Yochai was a famous rabbi who lived in Israel 1800 years ago in the era of the Mishna scholars, known as “Tannaim”, during the Roman period, after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E.

He was one of the most brilliant students of famous Rabbi Akiva, and is credited for the authorship of the “Zohar” ("The Illumination"), the main and fundamental work of Jewish Mysticism, known to us as “Kabbalah”.

He lived in the era of holy sages, who were workers of miracles and who had the power to rise above the realm of the physical world and visit the upper spiritual worlds. It is written in the “Gemara” (Avoda Zara, page 10) that the smallest of the Tannaim had the power to resurrect the dead.

The Talmud tells us that Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai criticized the Roman government, which placed a death decree on his head. Rabbi Shimon was forced to go into hiding with his son for thirteen years. They sheltered in a cave in a place called Pekien, surviving by eating a dry fruit called carob, drinking from a spring of fresh water, and studying the Torah all day long, except during prayers, to sustain them.

During that period, they learned Torah with various visitors from the upper worlds, mainly Moshe Rabeynu - Moses, referred to in the Zohar as “Raaya Meheymana” (“Loyal Shepherd”), and other learning partners, such as the prophet Eliyahu - Elijah, and the sage, Rabbi Hamnuna Sabba. Emerging from the cave after thirteen years, Rabbi Shimon settled in Mairon in the Galilee.

The Holy Zohar is written in the ancient language of Aramaic and structured in the form of conversations among a group of spiritual masters and scholars headed by Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai, who lived in the 2nd and 3rd Centuries C.E.

Commenting on the deepest levels of the Torah secrets - and it is The Ultimate Resource for connection with the Light - transcends the limits of the physical world. It is truly an unlimited resource of brilliant spiritual Light. The Zohar is so holy, so profound and powerful, that it actually has the power to draw Light into our lives and bring blessings, protection, and well-being into the lives of all who come into its presence. In the day of his departure, Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai revealed the main work and highlights of the Zohar, in “Adra Zuta” (“Small Gathering”) uncovering the Torah’s most sacred secrets of creation, starting from “Ein Sof” (the “Endless Light”) the “Tsimsum” (the “Light Restriction”), the beginning of all beginning, through the creation of endless upper spiritual worlds and “Sefirot” (“Illuminations”), all the way down to this physical realm. You can find all this amazing information in the book “Mekor Shviley HaChochmah” (“The Origin of the Wisdom Trails”).

The Zohar was kept hidden for 900 years, between the 2nd and 11th Centuries C.E.  Up to the 16th Century C.E., Kabbalah was taught only to a few worthy and qualified Torah scholars with the qualities of holiness and pure thought. In the 16th Century C.E., a Kabbalist arose who explained and opened up Rabbi Shimon’s work, the fundamentals of Kabbalah, and the secrets concealed in the Zohar. This was a holy Torah scholar named Rabbi Isaac Luria, also known as the Ariz”l, who lived in the city of Tsfat in the Galilee some 500 years ago (1534-1572).

Because of his remarkable Torah knowledge and level, some say the Ariz”l belonged to the era of Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai, some 1300 years before. Through his main student, Rabbi Haiim Vital, the Ariz”l gave us eight books of Kabbalah called “eight gates” with the main work called “Eitz Haiim”, “Tree of Life”.

In the 20th Century, a holy soul appeared on the scene of the Kabbalah world. This was Rabbi Yehudah Leib Ashlag, known as “Baal Ha’sulam” for his amazing commentary on the “Holy Zohar”, as well as for his profound work called “Talmud Eser Sefirot” (the “Study of Ten Illuminations”), explaining and teaching Kabbalah according to the Ariz”l’sEitz Haiim”, and teaching us the wisdom of Kabbalah in a way that our generation could understand.

Kabbalah teaches us that the universe began with one thought of the Creator. This one thought created and encompasses all embracing reality, including the upper worlds and this lower world in which we live. This was a world in which every human being would enjoy total happiness and fulfillment, free from any form of chaos or pain. This is what the Creator desires and intends.  Kabbalah promotes love and understanding of the Creator and His purpose in creating the world. Understanding the true message of Kabbalah will help us respect, understand, appreciate, and love one another, so that we can live in a less chaotic and more harmonious world.

Unfortunately, in our time, the Kabbalah does not receive the respect and the seriousness that it deserves. It became a trend commercialized by greed; everybody is jumping on the Kabbalah bandwagon, just because it is fashionable or likely to be profitable. Many who have no knowledge and understanding of Kabbalah are creating a misconception and misunderstanding of this beautiful and powerful part of the holy Torah.  We must always be mindful to preserve the highest respect worthy of this most cherished, sacred gift, the Kabbalah.
